SSLDC, Robert Matchett awarded at Bravo
The Brashear Association celebrated its 94th year of service to South Pittsburgh communities at its annual awards luncheon, Bravo, Brashear!, on Thursday, Oct. 27 at Le Mont Restaurant.
The Board of Directors of the South Pittsburgh agency presented two awards at the luncheon. The 2011 Community Service Award was presented to the South Side Local Development Company. For more than two decades, the South Side Local Development Company has fostered the revitalization of the South Side through its attention to historic preservation and community development and its provision of technical assistance to residents, businesses, and organizations. The award was accepted by the president of the SSLDC, Dr. Paul Lorincy, and Rick Belloli, SSLDC executive director.
Dr. Barbara A. Rudiak, former principal of Pittsburgh Phillips and member of Brashear's board, presented the Georgina Chamberlain Peters Scholarship to Robert Matchett, a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania who has demonstrated a commitment to community volunteerism and service to others. Mr. Matchett attended Phillips Elementary, participated in Brashear's programs, and volunteered extensively for community organizations. His mother accepted the award on his behalf.
Board elections were held during the business meeting of the association. The following individuals were re-elected to three-year terms: Virginia Carik, a South Side
resident and community volunteer; Jennifer H. Jeffers, another South Sider who is employed by the Department of City Planning; John E. Kirk III, owner of John Gmiter Funeral Home; Tom Smith, the editor of The South Pittsburgh Reporter; and, Andrea Williams, a Beltzhoover resident who serves as the executive director of the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation.
