Dispose of unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday at Zone 3 station

The Allegheny County Health Department is joining with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other local partners in promoting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29.

The collection event for expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at more than 30 sites in Allegheny County and dozens of additional locations in other counties throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. In the South Pittsburgh area, the Zone 3 Police Station, corner of Arlington and Warrington avenues in Allentown, will accept the unwanted drugs. For a complete list of sites, visit www.deadiversion. usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html.

The public is strongly encouraged to bring prescription drugs to these sites for free and anonymous disposal, no questions asked. It is important for such medications to be properly disposed of in order to prevent misuse, abuse or diversion to illegal use.

The initiative addresses a vital public health and public safety issue. Rates of prescription drug abuse and the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses from such drugs are alarmingly high, and studies show most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends and come right from medicine cabinets in the home.
