Allentown senior centers celebrating National Senior Center Month

September 13, 2011

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) has designated September as National Senior Center Month.

Using the NCOA theme of "It Happens at My Senior Center: My Life, My Time, My Life," Allentown's Hill Top Center, 631 E. Warrington Avenue, and Henry Kaufmann Center, 2201 Salisbury Street, are celebrating all year long.

"We're hoping for increased participation this month and throughout the year by offering more activities, more trips and more fun" According to Cyndie Carioli, services and activities coordinator for Allentown Senior Citizen Centers, Inc., "Senior centers throughout the county are experiencing a decline in participation so "we have to find creative ways to appeal to a variety of ages and interests."

In honor of National Senior Center Month, anyone over 60 who visits either Allentown center will be automatically entered into a free drawing for each visit during the month. Anyone bringing a friend over 60 will get a double entry in the raffle for that day.

"We're trying to entice older adults to support their local senior center. All it takes is one visit or more each month for a free cup of coffee or a free nutritious lunch or participating in one of dozens of free activities and programs," says Ms. Carioli.

On Friday, Sept. 30, each Allentown Senior Center will hold a drawing for a $25 gift card to Shop ‘n Save. Seniors do not have to be present to win.

During the month of September, Allentown Senior Centers are offering chair dancing, line dancing, restaurant trips, farm trips, Wii bowling, a Wii exercise program, a birthday party, blood pressure screenings and gerontology counseling. In October they're going to a casino and offering CCAC crafting classes in addition to all of the activities offered in September – and they're all free.

Ms. Carioli encourages older adults to offer up new ideas for activities and programs, "The National Senior Center Month theme of "My Life, My Time, My Way, is meant to support older adults to do it their way at a time that works for them. If we're not doing anything that floats your boat, you can offer up new ideas. I'm open for suggestions."
