Ferlo to host UPMC-Highmark meeting

August 23, 2011

State Senator Jim Ferlo (D-Allegheny) will host and moderate a town hall meeting focusing on consumer concerns regarding the dispute between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and Highmark, Inc.

The event will take place Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall Ballroom, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

"The breakup between UPMC and Highmark may cause a revolution in patient care in Southwest Pennsylvania and health care consumers are rightfully unnerved and outraged," Senator Ferlo said. "In addition, this whole fiasco has exposed flaws in Act 55 standards and people want solutions."

The public is welcome to come out and voice their concerns regarding this important issue.

"The goal is to provide public space for citizens to learn, share, vent their frustrations, and hopefully begin to develop a collaborative way forward," Senator Ferlo added. "This event is intended to serve in compliment and not competition with the House and Senate committee meetings.

Senator Ferlo has also started a blog about the issue to encourage public dialogue, http://upmcvshighmark.blogspot.com.

Those who wish to speak at the town hall are also encouraged but not required to register with Senator Ferlo's office at 412-621-3006.@
