North Park Lake filled to capacity Irwin Run boat launch now open

July 19, 2011

North Park Lake has filled to capacity and is now flowing over the spillway at the intersection of Babcock Boulevard and Pearce Mill Road. As a result, the dam's drainage culvert, which had been ensuring a continuous flow of water into Pine Creek, has been fully closed.

The Allegheny County Parks and Public Works department also announced the opening of the refurbished Irwin Run boat launch, which is on Babcock Boulevard just north of Pearce Mill Road. The boat launch is free for public use and open daily from dawn to dusk. Only non-motorized boats are permitted on North Park Lake.

To date, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission has only stocked the lake with warm water fingerlings, such as largemouth bass, channel catfish and panfish. Trout stocking will resume in spring 2012.

Venture Outdoors will begin daily boat rentals at the North Park Lake Boathouse in the coming weeks.
