Family festival in McKinley Park Saturday

The second of three Highmark Family Outdoor Festivals will be held Saturday, July 23 from noon–4 p.m. at McKinley Park near Beltzhoover.

Highmark Family Outdoor Festivals are bringing free beginner-oriented outdoor recreation to local parks throughout the city of Pittsburgh. At each festival participants can search for hidden treasures while geocaching, scale Venture Outdoors' beginner-friendly climbing wall, take a relaxed bike ride around the park, test their skills on the bicycle rodeo and enjoy food and live music from Nick Nice Productions.

"Beltzhoover is a unique and budding community," says Felicia Davis. "They've got a beautiful park that's perfect for community festivals. We want to thank the Hilltop Alliance for helping us connect with the local community and showcase this urban green space!"

Those attending on July 23 will also experience an array of family centered activities and crafts provided by local partners:

• Nature activities will be provided by Frick Environmental Center.

• In the story telling area author Michael Scotto will tell captivating tales of outdoors adventures.

• Children of all ages can play wood smoke bean toss and reverse hangman with GASP (Group Against Smog and Pollution).

• Outfitters REI and Wilderness Voyagers will be on hand.

• Educational activities will also be provided by PennFuture and FitWits.

The final Highmark Family Outdoor Festival will be from noon – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Allegheny Commons. This festival will boast similar attractions and partners, plus free kayaking on Lake Elizabeth.

The festivals serve as signature events of Venture Outdoors Family and Community Programs. Now in its third year, the initiative encourages families to get outside, stay healthy and create a pattern of participation and appreciation for the city's outdoor assets. The multi-year initiative seeks to reach families in diverse communities through outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship programs.
