Appliance recycling progam ends

July 12, 2011

The Allegheny County Health Department reported Appliance Warehouse's countywide free pickup and recycling program for refrigerant-containing household appliances has been successfully completed.

The program collected and recycled more than 3,500 refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and other appliances no longer in use.

"Removing refrigerant from and recycling these appliances is a win-win-win for the economy, the environment and public health," said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.

"Recycling such appliances not only cuts down on illegal dumping and saves landfill space, but also prevents the release of refrigerant gases that deplete the ozone layer, which blocks the sun's ultraviolet rays that increase the risk of skin cancer."
