Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is among the first pediatric hospitals in the nation to release its own free app, now for phones with the Android operating system. In March, Children's released its first app for the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
The app, called ChildrensPgh, is a pediatric symptom checker that features a quick way to call the hospital and Emergency Department, the ability to request an appointment with a Children's specialist online, links to Children's Hospital's Express Care Centers and more.
"After the recent release of the iPhone app, we received such positive feedback that we wanted to bring this technology to a larger audience," said Steven G. Docimo, M.D., Children's chief medical officer. "This app is an excellent resource for parents in that it's a virtual first aid reference, and it also helps parents easily connect with Children's Hospital at the touch of a button."
ChildrensPgh is available for download from Android Market or from Children's Hospital's website.
Similar to the iPhone app, ChildrensPgh offers advice and answers to many questions parents might have for their children, from abdominal pain to wheezing and every symptom in between. ChildrensPgh is derived from clinical protocols used by pediatricians and nurses in 10,000 practices and 400 nurse advice call centers in the United States and Canada. The protocols have been tested for more than 15 years on more than 150 million symptom calls.
The app also features three-step navigation: the user will choose the most appropriate symptom they are looking for from among 91 available, touch the symptom decision chart to find the recommended action, and then follow the self-care advice. The symptoms can be located quickly and easily by using an alphabetical index, body area index or keyword search.
In addition to the care guides, the app features pediatric dosage tables by weight for common over-the-counter medications , visual images to help classify symptoms (e.g. athlete's foot), and first-aid illustrations to support immediate action, if needed.
ChildrensPgh is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. To make an appointment at Children's Hospital, parents and caregivers should call 412-692-PEDS (7337) or go to www.chp.edu and click on "Online Appointment Request."
