Cornfest looking to be bigger, better this year

Last year's Community Cornfest in Phillips Park was a great success and organizers are hoping for an even better festival again this year.

The return to the park gave it a fun picnic-like atmosphere. Based on feedback they plan to have even more children's activities, art in the park and local entertainment. There will be other changes to this year's Cornfest as well, one of which is to shorten the hours to noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 20.

The 2011 Cornfest Planning Committee already has entertainment commitments from our Carrick High School Band, Bhutanese community dancers, Cathasaigh, Steel City Jazz Project and Nalaladina.

Groups that participated last year made the Cornfest such a big success and organizers hope they will be able to join in again. This year more groups will be invited and individuals will be included.

A change this year is organizers are asking for a small donation from participants to reserve their space, Non-profit organizations using the Cornfest for fundraising purposes (if they will be selling things) will be asked for a $20 space-reservation fee. If the organization provides information only, the fee is waived, but donations towards event expenses are welcome. Participants will also need to provide their own tables this year.

The Cornfest Planning Committee will use the funds from reservations and donations to pay for promotion, advertising, and to compensate the entertainers as fairly as possible. Last year, entertainers accepted very minimal donations.

The Overbrook and Carrick Community Councils understand many participating organizations utilize the Cornfest for its fundraising potential. To support that, and to ensure the best experience for all participants, the Cornfest Planning Committee will coordinate food and drink offerings to avoid duplication.

To reserve a niche (e.g. hot dogs, pierogies, smoothies, lemonade) fill out the reservation form or send the organization's name, contact address, telephone and email, product offered and table area required and return it with a check for $20 made out to the Carrick Community Council, as soon as possible. They will try to be sure everyone gets the category they want, but more importantly they want to avoid any duplication of foods and beverages.
