South Side ‘New Artists' exhibit their original works of art
The gymnasium at Pittsburgh Phillips K-5 was transformed into an art exhibit that rivaled the finest art collections of New York, London, and Paris on the evening of Tuesday, April 26.
Student artists hailed from The Brashear Association's third, fourth, and fifth grade after school art enrichment program, New Artist. With more than 100 art pieces on display, it was a night to remember.
Students, families, friends, Brashear Association supporters, and South Pittsburgh community members were invited to view the show from 5:30-7 p.m. Each student artist had at least two pieces from the year's portfolio on display in addition to an artist photograph and biography.
Thanks to a donation by Utrecht Art Supplies South Side, Brashear was able to purchase professional-grade materials for each student to complete a final project utilizing skills gained from the program year curriculum.
Under the direction and mentorship of Miss Claire DiIlio and Miss Emily Dunn, New Artist instructors, students explored the concept of "community" in their final pieces. Third grade students used acrylic paints and clayboards to depict their ideal neighborhood. On large canvases, fourth and fifth grade students employed gesture drawing and color theory to portray a member of their community against a backdrop of their favorite Pittsburgh setting.
Fourth and fifth grade final portraits will be on display at Big Dog Coffee, 2717 Sarah Street, for the month of May. Community members are invited to view the display and offer reflections.
The Brashear Association and Pittsburgh Phillips have a long history of collaboration and participation in Brashear programs has grown steadily over the last years. Student interest in the New Artist program reached unprecedented numbers this fall, prompting Brashear to open a separate class for third grade students.
