Aileen Wilson of Beltzhoover was recently named the Outstanding Volunteer in Senior Service by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Allegheny County.
Ms. Wilson and others received their awards at RSVP's 38th annual awards luncheon at the Sheraton Station Square.
Ms. Wilson, 90, volunteers at the Elder-ado Knoxville Center three days a week for a total of more than 500 hours a year. She's been volunteering at the center for the past 25 years.
Her responsibilities include serving lunch at noon, assembling meals for home delivery and assuring the cleanliness of the kitchen. Ms. Wilson's nominator pointed out she continues to share her time even when she's not "on the clock." If a consumer needs a special item that is only sold in the Strip District, she will purchase it for them when she does her own Saturday morning shopping.
"She is a very giving person who has a compassionate and giving heart. At 90 years of age, she loves helping others – including those who are much younger than she is," according to her nominator. "If you were to look up the word ‘volunteer' in the dictionary, it would tell you to look to this woman for further information."
