New food pantry opening in South Side this week

September 21, 2010

A new food pantry will soon be operating in South Side when the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania and the South Side parish of Holy Assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church begin the St. Kyrill of White Lake Food Pantry.

The food pantry will be unique as it is designed to supplement the work already being done by other local food pantries by providing for those who fall through the cracks and to all in need of assistance. The food pantry has been placed under the spiritual protection of a Russian saint famed for his prayers and labors of multiplying food to feed the poor.

Operations of the St. Kyrill of White Lake Food Pantry will begin in the Church Hall of Holy Assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church, 105 S. 19th Street, South Side, on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.

However, anyone needing food assistance at other times may contact the church at 412-431-6428 to arrange a time to pick up food.

The Archdiocese welcomes the help of all through donations of non-perishable food items, meals that are ready to prepare or eat, and resources, both financial and volunteers.

For more information on how to help, contact Holy assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church at 412-431-6428.
