Car Free events coming up on South Side

September 7, 2010

The benefits of going "Car Free" will be explored in several upcoming events in South Side.

A "Bike Commuting Forum" will be held at WYEP, 67 Bedford Square, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 7-8:30 p.m. BikePGH recently printed 15,000 revised copies of the popular Bike Commuting 101 guide. The guide provides the basis for the forum to engage participants in a conversation that explores how comfort, convenience, and safety can help make commuting to and from work one of the best parts of the day.

REI and the South Side Local Development Company will host a Car Free Fridays sign up on Friday, Sept. 17 from 7:30– 10 a.m. at REI's SouthSide Works store

Those who agree to go car free on Friday, Sept. 17 will receive the South Side property card full of discounts for South Side, Downtown, and Oakland businesses and be entered in the car free August raffle. Those who ride their bike there can enjoy a light breakfast courtesy of Bruegger's Bagels and Big Dog Coffee.

Also on September 17 will be the South Side Bike Tour from 6:30– 8:30 p.m. at REI in SouthSide Works. Aaron Sukenik of the South Side Local Development Company and Chris Beech of Thick Bikes will lead a ride on the flats and slopes of the South Side exploring some of the wonderful views, history, and amenities of the neighborhood. The ride will end at OTB Bicycle Cafe on Carson Street.
