Mount Washington CDC dedicates new efficient lights on Grandview Avenue

August 24, 2010

A beautiful day on Grandview Avenue in Mount Washington saw dignitaries line up to speak about the $400,000 investment along the city's most prominent view.

Senator Wayne D. Fontana was the featured speaker and responsible for securing the state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funding in 2006.

"It is a pleasure to have secured the funding for this project due to the nature of Grandview Avenue and the ability for the city to see a cost savings through reduced energy consumption in the long-term," Senator Fontana said, touting the project.

Mount Washington Community Development Corp. Board President J.T. Smith, City Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith and State Senator Wayne Fontana dedicate the new fluted poles and energy efficient lights along Grandview Avenue.

The grant allowed the city to replace 85 dated street lights with new fluted poles and LED lights. The city expects to see a life expectancy of the bulbs increase by 50 percent while reduce energy costs by approximately 70 percent annually according to information provided by the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation (MWCDC).

JT Smith, MWCDC board president, thanked Senator Fontana, the Mayor's Office, the URA, City Department of Public Works and others who were involved in making this project happen.

Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith also provided remarks at the ceremony. The new streetlights are in her District 2 area. Also in attendance and recognized for their contributions to the project were Joanna Doven representing Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Gigi Saladna representing the Urban Redevelopment Authority. State Representative Dan Deasy was not in attendance, but was recognized for his work towards the street lighting project when he was on City Council representing District 2.
