Allentown centers distributing vouchers

It's that time again, when four free $5 vouchers (worth a total of $20) will be distributed at both sites of Allentown Senior Citizen Centers, Inc.

Distributions will take place on Tues., June 29, at the Henry Kaufmann Center, 2201 Salisbury Street, Arlington, from 10 a.m. to noon and at the Allentown/Hilltop Center, 631 E. Warrington Avenue, Allentown, from 1-3 p.m. Only one set of vouchers per consumer is allowed.

Seniors must be at least 60 years of age (or turn 60 in 2010) to receive the free vouchers. Eligibility is based on residency, age, and income. Eligible persons must reside in Allegheny County and have a total household income at or below $20,036 for single individuals or $26,955 for married couples. Married individuals can each receive their own set of FMNP vouchers. No documentation is required for proof of income.

By signing the voucher form at the distribution site, the participant is verifying that he/she is within the eligible income range. Photo identification is required for proof of age and residency.

A proxy (helper) may assist an eligible consumer that is unable to attend on distribution day. Proxy forms are available at both Henry Kaufmann and Allentown/Hilltop Senior Centers and must be completed and signed by both the consumer who is unable to attend and the proxy (helper) prior to June 29. A proxy can help no more than two consumers and can pick up their own vouchers, as well, on distribution day.

This popular program is a part of the Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), administered through the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging. Through FMNP, older adults can use their vouchers to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables at many of the farmers' markets and farm stands throughout Allegheny County. Participating farmer stand vendors accepting FMNP vouchers will display an orange sign at their stand. Once distributed, the vouchers will be accepted through November 30, 2010.
