Pennsylvania Resources Council has begun a new round of backyard and worm composting classes in the Pittsburgh area.
In the composting classes, participants will learn how to compost yard trimmings, leaves, and food scraps and receive a composting bin.
Sign up for a Backyard Composting class and get ready for spring. This workshop thoroughly covers the importance of composting, setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways of using finished compost.
Participants will receive an Earth Machine Compost Bin with attendance. This bin, approved across the state as an ideal bin for urban and suburban areas, has an 80-gallon capacity, and has a $180 value.
Workshop cost is $40 for a single or $50 a couple and includes one compost unit per registration. Classes will take place at:
• Hahn Nursery, North Hills – Sun., April 18 from 3 – 5 p.m.
• Springdale Free Public Library – Sat., April 24 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn about the benefits of composting with worms. It's easy, fun, odorless and produces a great soil additive.
Class participants will learn how to house, feed, harvest and care for their own worms. They should be prepared to roll-up their sleeves and make their own worm composting bin.
Each participant or couple will be provided with a bin, instructions, and worms and will go home with a complete, ready to use vermiculture system.
Cost for the class is $45 for a single or $55 for a couple and includes one compost unit per registration. The class will take place at the CCI Center on South Side on Tues., May 4 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
In an effort to reduce the solid waste stream, the workshops are being co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, the City of Pittsburgh Environmental Services Division, and the Allegheny County Health Department. The free bin distribution is made possible through a donation from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Giant Eagle.
Those interested in attending one of the workshops should contact Lauren Seiple at 412-431-4449 ext.325 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Class space is limited, so register early.
