Volunteers needed to help clean up ‘Jurassic Valley'

March 16, 2010

Last September the South Side Slopes Elm Street Committee and the South Side Local Development Company held its first volunteer clean-up event in South Side Park.

The effort focused on removing invasive species of plants in the plateau area around Bandi Schaum Field, across the Mission Street Bridge from 18th Street.

This year another clean-clean up is planned on March 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to clean up the "Jurassic Valley" of the park. Volunteers are needed to help eradicate invasive plant species in the park. Tools and training to know which plants are invasive and which are native will be provided.

To volunteer, email Judy Dyda, SSLDC Elm Street Manager, at: judy@southsidepgh.com or call 412-481-0651 x 32.

Volunteers will work in two hour shifts: 10 a.m. to noon; noon to 2 p.m .; and, 2 to 4 p.m.

Providing assistance for the clean-up are: City of Pittsburgh Public Works, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Partners in Parks, and, Pennsylvania Resources Council.
