City accepting reservations for indoor park shelters before annual Permit Day

January 5, 2010

Due to high demand the City of Pittsburgh is accepting reservations to rent certain enclosed park shelters.

These popular shelters are located in Banksville Park, West End Park, and at the West End/Elliott Overlook. Previously, the permits for these particular shelters could only be obtained on Permit Day, which typically is a Saturday in March.

Those interested in reserving one of these shelters may contact the Permit Office by calling 412-255-2370, or by visiting the Department of Public Works, at 611 Second Ave., Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Payment for the rental must be made in full, by money order only, within five business days after contacting the Permit Office.

The other 23 rentable shelters are only available starting on Permit Day, tentatively scheduled for March 27.

Permit Day is held at the City-County Building on a designated Saturday in March. Only city residents may apply for permits at this time. Proof of residency and age will be required (driver's license, voter registration, current year's tax receipts, etc.). Permits are distributed through a lottery system. After Permit Day, applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to City of Pittsburgh residents.

Additional information regarding the shelter applications can be found at
