Get in shape with the help of TNT program

It's time, once again, to reflect on your goals for the new year.

For most people getting fit and healthy is at the top of the list. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training® (TNT) program can help make this the year everyone keeps their New Year's resolution.

TNT, the world's first and largest charity sports training program, provides four to five months of certified coaching, a supportive group of teammates and nutritional advice to help complete a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or cycling event.

TNT arranges airfare and hotel accommodations to the event the participant chooses – in locales including San Diego and Lake Tahoe. In exchange, participants raise funds to support blood cancer research and patient services. And if coaching and cheering from teammates still isn't enough motivation, every participant trains in honor of a patient battling leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

"Team In Training is the answer to the broken New Year's resolution," said Tina Massari, executive director, Western PA/WV Chapter. "The program gives you the support you need to get through those moments of weakness, when you want to give up. And knowing that you're doing this to help local patients battling cancer gives you that extra motivation."

Since its inception in 1988 more than 390,000 participants have raised more than $950 million to support the LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of lives of patients and their families.

"Team In Training provides the structure to make it easier to stick to your plan," explains Donna Grogan, vice president, LLS Sports Training Programs, who boiled down five tips to help you achieve fitness goals this year:

Tip 1: Do it for yourself – and someone else. Get in the shape of your life while funding research to find cures for cancers like childhood leukemia.

Tip 2: Set a goal and don't give up. Choose a concrete, measurable goal, and don't stop until it's achieved.

Tip 3: Do it with teammates. Exercising alone is no fun. Work out with a supportive, friendly group of people.

Tip 4: Make friends along the way. Getting fit in a team environment can pay dividends in the form of friendship.

Tip 5: Participate in a winning program. Joining a structured program built for success, like Team In Training, will help ensure success.

The Western PA/WV chapter of LLS is holding information meetings for spring and summer events, including Just A Short Run, Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, San Diego Rock ‘N' Roll Marathon, America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the Philadelphia Triathlon. They are:
