The Allegheny County Health Department is sponsoring its 11th annual environmental poster contest for students in grades 6-8.
The theme of this year's contest is "Green Buying Power" and aims to promote environmentally friendly choices by consumers when shopping for clothes, cosmetics, electronics, groceries, cleaning products, school supplies and other daily necessities.
"We're urging students to depict smart and green consumer choices that take into account how a product might affect the environment based on where it comes from, how it's made, what it and its packaging are made of, and what resources go into producing and delivering it to market," said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.
The deadline for entries is February 12, 2010. Winners will be announced in March and honored in conjunction with Earth Day celebrations in April.
Teachers who would like to have their classes participate in the poster contest should contact the Health Department for details.
