City fall leaf curbside pickup program underway
The City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works is now operating the 2009 fall leaf curbside recycling program, which is slated to run through November 28.
Each resident will receive one pickup on a designated recycling day during the month of November. Residents will need to place leaves in paper leaf bags for recycling collection. Paper leaf bags can be purchased at department and hardware stores.
Bags must be placed at the curb for pickup on residents' leaf recycling collection day (same day as Blue Bag collection on the designated week).
Leaves will be composted into mulch at a licensed contractor site. City crews will not collect leaves or yard debris left at the curb by independent or contracted lawn workers.
Leaves placed in plastic bags or placed out on the wrong week will not be accepted as recycling and will be landfilled. Participation is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.
– Nov. 2 - 6
– Nov. 9 - 13
– Nov. 16 - 20
– Nov. 23 - 28
Residents may still take leaves, grass, and other yard debris to one of the three city yard-debris drop off locations. They are:
• Public Works Second Division: at the corner of North Dallas Ave. and Hamilton Ave. in the Homewood - East Liberty Area;
• Public Works Third Division: in Hazelwood on Melanchton Ave. off the 5200 block of Second Ave.;
• Public Works Fifth Division: in the West End off of Steuben Street on Hassler Street; and
• City Forestry Division: Highland Park area, 6520 Stanton Ave.
Proof of city residency is required when dropping off yard-debris. A fee will be charged for amounts in excess of a personal car.
