South 28th closed for construction, East Carson Street paving begins
South 28th Street between Sarah Street and East Carson Street (Route 837) was closed to traffic on Friday, Oct. 23, on South Side.
The closure will continue through Oct. 31. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. Traffic will follow East Carson Street or Sarah Street to the next intersection to bypass the closed section of South 28th Street.
The closure is necessary for paving operations on East Carson Street that will continue through next weekend. East Carson Street will remain open for most of the paving operations although a full closure is tentatively planned for Oct. 31. (
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to use extreme caution and expect delays when traveling on East Carson Street in the construction area.
The $14.3 million project developed in cooperation with the City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) includes widening and reconstructing about one mile of East Carson Street to accommodate additional lanes beginning just west of South 25th Street to just east of Sara Street. Work also includes intersection improvements, traffic signals, drainage, sidewalk and curb upgrades and other construction. The prime contractor for the project is Independent Enterprises, Inc. of Oakdale. The overall project will be completed in fall 2010.
