October 20, 2009

State Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, received the Harold Bushey Government Award from the Western Pennsylvania Minority Supplier Development Council.

The presentation took place during the council's Fifth Annual Walk of Excellence Awards Gala, at Heinz Field's East Club Lounge on October 16.

The council said the event celebrates "the achievements of the stars of supplier diversity," including major corporations and successful minority businesses.

This year, Mr. Wheatley successfully advocated for the creation of a select House of Representatives committee, which he chaired, that made 16 sets of recommendations to ensure participation in state contracts and purchasing from minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged-owned businesses.

The committee's 59-page report is available on Rep. Wheatley's Web site: It includes six pages of findings on what state government has been doing to ensure diversity in contracts and purchasing. Testimony from the 63 witnesses at the committee's five public hearings is also available on his Web site.
