It's election time for the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation again.
The September 17 forum meeting gave candidates for officer and board positions a chance to talk about their backgrounds and philosophies prior to next month's voting meeting.
There are 10 persons running for eight board positions. Candidates are running for each of the officer positions including three people vying for the two vice president positions.
Phil Delmer, a current board member running for treasurer: "I was born in Mount Washington and lived here three quarters of my life. I went to high school in Dormont. My wife (Diane) and I lived on Bigbee since 1980. My wife has been active in the parks. She has adopted a park. I am interested in the community, development and the parks." He said he has worked as a steelworker and in several sales and management positions.
Greg Falvo, running for the board: "I have been a funeral director since 1978…I view Mount Washington as the crown jewel of the city. I'm interested in family, businesses and the community. My main concern is to get businesses active. We need stores. I personally would like to see a shoe store…Mount Washington is a great resource. I'll accept all votes."
Tom Brady, running for re-election to the board: "I work for both sides of the hill, Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights…I have served on every committee the CDC has and have been involved with the Friends of Grandview Park…I ask a lot of questions."
Peter Karlovich, running for re-election and for vice president: "The three important things are: businesses, housing for residents and green space…We can't stand still. We hope things will always improve. Please come out and vote. Vote for me." He said he was particularly concerned about absentee landlords and improving aesthetics.
Jon Lusin, running for the board: "I'm a registered architect at a firm downtown. I commute on the incline. I'm interested in the sustainability of the community…I bring a different perspective. I lived in other cities and where I went to college. I'm a young professional. I have seen the good and bad in other places."
Anne Massucci, a current board member running for re-election as vice president: "I think it is important to draw more young people here. My passion is to have solid schools and solid recreation…We should also engage more businesses."
Joe Milne, running for the board: "I represent the Duquesne Heights contingent. You'll see me regularly wrestling four dogs down the street. If you do, say hello… Eight years ago I fell in love with the neighborhood. It is truly the hub of the city. You can get anywhere in 10 or 15 minutes… It is not Shadyside or Squirrel Hill. There's no attitude up here." He works in graphic design and marketing.
Jay Molluso, running for the board: "The middle name in Mount Washington Community Development Corporation is development. Our location always had potential. We have to make it real…I'm an attorney. I was on the board four years(previously). I was president… I bring experience."
Linda Rosenthal, running for re-election to the board and as secretary: "I taught English for 32 years. I've had poetry published. I have lived here for 25 years. I have learned so much about Mount Washington…I'm interested in development, green space, safety and stores."
J.T. Smith, running for re-election to the board and for another term as president: "I manage large technology projects for GNC." He said there were great changes in the future of the Mount such as the project replacing The Edge and the changes earmarked for the closed South Hills High School. "We had some bad press over fighting. But I really haven't seen it. We have had disagreements but they're healthy."
Andy Spanoudakis, running for the board: "It is really an exciting time to live up here. I'll see what I can do to draw more people. I know I can help." He said he lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years, works in marketing and was active in the athletic association.
Mr. Smith read a letter from Mike Tabachnick, who is running for re-election to the board and for vice president and couldn't attend the meeting. Mr. Tabachnick complimented the board's efforts in hiring a new executive director and making changes after an organizational reassessment.
