Mobile spay/neuter clinic in Allentown

City Councilman Bruce Kraus and Animal Friends have partnered to bring free and low-cost spay/neuter services to the City of Pittsburgh.

The partnership will kick off on Friday, Sept. 11, when Animal Friends' veterinary team brings Animal Friends' Mobile Resource Center to St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 823 Climax Street, Allentown. The mobile spay-neuter clinic will host a full day of surgeries for the neighborhood's owned and feral cats.

Owned cats will be spayed or neutered for just $10. Owners must qualify for low-income assistance. Feral cats arriving in humane traps will be altered for free. Cats will be spayed or neutered and vaccinated against rabies. Feral cats will be eartipped.

Eligible residents of Allentown are invited to schedule appointments by calling Animal Friends at 412-847-7094. A total of 30 cats will be altered by appointment only; residents must schedule a time by calling 412-847-7094 before September 10 at 3 p.m.

The September clinic day is the first of three spay/neuter days planned for Councilman Kraus's district, with two more dates to be scheduled in October.

This new partnership between Animal Friends and the City of Pittsburgh is an important part of Animal Friends' commitment to alter over 24,000 pets in southwestern Pennsylvania over the next three years. In Allegheny County alone, conservative estimates show that 25,000 homeless and abandoned pets are euthanized each year. The largest cause of euthanasia is the inability to find adoptive homes for unwanted animals. Spaying and neutering is the only proactive solution to ending pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia.

"We at Animal Friends hope that Allentown will be the first of many neighborhoods served in the city of Pittsburgh. We are so grateful to Councilman Kraus for making spay/neuter services accessible to city residents who want to be responsible pet owners, but simply lack the resources to spay or neuter their cats," Kathleen Beaver, Animal Friends' chief operating officer, said
