Second chance for seniors for farmers' market checks

August 4, 2009

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, administered by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging, will hold a second distribution of Farmers Market checks for those who were unable to participate in the earlier distribution on July 7.

Farmers' Market Nutrition Program checks will be distributed again at the Allentown Senior Center (Hilltop Center), 631 E. Warrington Ave., 412-481-5484, on Thursday, Aug. 6 from 1-4 p.m. or until they are gone.

This program offers the coupons, (available in sets of four, valued at $5 each) on a first come, first served basis to qualifying older adults living within Allegheny County who have not yet received coupons this year.

To qualify, a person must be age 60 or older, a resident of Allegheny County, and have an income of less than $20,036 per year for a single person or $26,955 for a married couple. Married couples are eligible to receive two sets of checks, one for the wife and one for the husband.

Seniors must bring proof of age and residency to receive the checks. No one under the age of 60 is eligible. Anyone living in a facility that provides meals on a regular basis is not eligible.

The recipient or proxy must sign the FMNP check at the time of purchase. If the consumer signs the check prior to purchase, the farmer will not accept the check. Lost or stolen checks can not be replaced—AAA must be notified immediately. FMNP checks will be accepted until November 30, 2009.
