Seniors will receive farmers' market checks

Health experts recommend eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables everyday for better health. Good nutrition is a critical factor in the health and well being of older Americans.

The Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) provides eligible Pennsylvania citizens with checks to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, grown or growable in Pennsylvania at their local farmers' market.

Allegheny County residents, 60 plus years of age with total 2008 net income of $20,036 (single individual) and $26,955 (married couple). Married couples are eligible to receive two sets of checks, one for the wife and one for the husband.

Recipient or proxy must sign the FMNP check at the time of purchase. If consumer signs the check prior to purchase, the farmer will not accept the check. Lost or stolen checks can not be replaced—AAA must be notified immediately. FMNP checks will be accepted until November 30, 2009.
