Pittsburgh South Hills Middle School (PSHMS) has received a $4400 Grant from the Heinz Foundation through the Pittsburgh Public Schools Excellence for All Plan.
Pittsburgh South Hills Middle School's grant application intent is to promote the Pittsburgh Promise. "Our Way to the Pittsburgh Promise," encompasses five evening events with the first one which was held on April 22.
The students engaged in a fun filled Career Party activity where they discovered their personality style. While the kids were off on their personality adventure, Dr. Deborah Cox and administration led the parents in a discussion on the Pittsburgh Promise and how important it is for both parents and students to begin working towards and talking about college at an early age.
When the students returned with their findings, they shared their results with their parents. All of the students and parents concurred with what they had learned. Parents and students laughed as they shared their suggested career/personality match which included "social," "enterprising," and "investigative" professions.
The next task that evening was to have the students complete an on-line and paper interest survey; both the parents and students worked together answering the questions. Once completed, they compared the two survey results and engaged in a discussion regarding the accuracy of both instruments. The final portion of the evening centered on using the interest surveys to research various colleges and locations on-line.
At closing, a home activity, setting personal goals and the actions needed to achieve those goals was handed out. The aim of the home activity is to continue the conversation and come to the next event with two goal statements, and strategies to reach those goals.
Over the next six weeks school staff will be meeting with the students and parents to continue with their journey of understanding the process of getting into college and working toward the Pittsburgh Promise. The scheduled evenings are May 20, and May 27. They all begin at 6:30 p.m. in the PSHMS library.
