Hard to recycle collection

May 12, 2009

There will be a drop-off collection event for hard-to-recycle items on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Allegheny County Health Department, Clack Health Center 39th Street and Penn Avenue, Lawrenceville.

The following items will be accepted for a nominal fee:

Tire with no rim, $2; TV 19" and under, $10; TV 20"-29", $20; TV 30"-39", $25; TV 40" or greater or console TV, $35; CPU, laptop or server, $5; monitor, $10; combination personal computer/monitor/keyboard, $15; printer/scanner/fax/small ups, $5; or, VHS/DVD/phone/router, $2.

No fees will be charged for cell phones, ink and toner cartridges, compact fluorescent light bulbs, alkaline batteries, crutches, canes and walkers.

A new partnership with Global Links enables area residents to drop off medical equipment and supplies – such as the crutches, canes and walkers – at all 2009 PRC collection events at no cost.

"PRC, in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department, is providing four opportunities to properly dispose of a ‘hard to recycle' items at collection events," according to PRC Regional Director Dave Mazza. "This year we're excited to introduce an opportunity to drop off medical equipment that can be reused at hospitals in Latin America. Annually, Global Links diverts 200 tons of materials that would have been landfilled or incinerated by redirecting home medical materials away from curbside trash cans and into the hands of individuals in need."

For more information or to volunteer for the collection event, call the Pennsylvania Resources Council at 412-488-7490, ext. 236.

The Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Resources Council are sponsors of the drop-off collection.
