Summer games for seniors coming throughout area

The 2009 Summer Senior Games will be held from June1-12 at various sites throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area.

The Summer Senior Games are open to individuals ages 60 and older who reside in Allegheny County. Age divisions for the games are as follows: 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 and older.

The following events will be held: archery, bocce, bowling, casting, darts, Frisbee toss, horseshoes, kooshball, pool (8-ball), shuffleboard, softball throw and walk-a-thon (½ mile). There also will be a lawn bowling demonstration at the bocce event.

Commemorative gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the first three finishers in each age division for each event at an awards banquet to be held following the competition.

Participants, ages 60 and older, in the Greenfield Glide 5-K Run, to be held on Sunday, June 7, also will be eligible for a commemorative Summer Senior Games medal.

The registration fee for the Summer Senior Games in $2, which covers the cost of all events except golf, bowling and the Greenfield Glide 5-K Run. The registration deadline for the Summer Senior Games is Tuesday, May 19.
