Traffic on East Carson Street (Route 837) will be shifted on Tuesday, April 14, in the area near the SouthSide Works.
The inbound (westbound) lane on East Carson Street will be closed. One 12-foot wide lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction by shifting traffic onto the outbound (eastbound) lanes between Hot Metal Street and 25th Street. The shift began at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Traffic will remain in this pattern around-the-clock through late July 2009.
Also starting on Tuesday, 26th and 27th streets will be closed at intersections on the north side of East Carson Street. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists during the closures. Traffic will follow East Carson Street to the next intersection to bypass the closed areas. Traffic will be detoured around the closed intersections using 25th, 28th, and Sidney streets.
The closures and restrictions are necessary as crews install storm and sanitary systems, paving and curb and sidewalk improvements. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to use extreme caution when traveling on East Carson Street in the construction area.
The $14.3 million PennDOT project developed in cooperation with the City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) includes widening and reconstructing about one mile of East Carson Street to accommodate additional lanes beginning just west of South 25th Street to just east of Sarah Street.
Work also includes intersection improvements, traffic signals, drainage, sidewalk and curb upgrades and other construction. The majority of work will occur on the north side of East Carson Street.
The overall project should be completed in fall 2010.
