Youth training day at the CCI Center

March 31, 2009

Sixty-five students from St. Annes School ranging from 6th to 8th grade recently filed into the CCI Center in the South Side of Pittsburgh to participate in “Youth Training Day.”

During this half-day forum, students learned about green roofs, green infrastructure and alternative energy.

While at the CCI Center they were able to see firsthand how green infrastructure has already made a difference in one community. The CCI Center is host to several kid-friendly green demonstrations such as a green roof, roof top garden, solar array and various energy efficient demonstrations.

Under the mentorship of Earth Force, Inc these students have already begun work on projects that will educate their community about storm water runoff, and reduction of non-point source pollution. The students have identified environmental issues in their community, and created a replicable green solution. They plan to stencil storm drains with captions to remind us that rainfall runoff can wash soil, yard waste, fertilizer, motor oil, and other contaminants into our waterways. Their plans also call for stormwater swales to be made as well as planting a garden.

Their projects will be funded in part by the Dominion Foundation, and the Heinz Endowments.
