Free series of chess classes for kids at So. Side library

January 20, 2009

The South Side Library will hold a series of free chess classes in January and February for children ages 6-12 who know the basic moves of the game.

The series will help children improve their skills, play against other kids in their age group and even enter a tournament. Research has shown that playing chess improves thinking abilities and leads to higher scores on standardized tests.

The classes are sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chess Club and will be held Saturdays from 1-2 p.m. on January 24, February 7, 14 and 28. The chess tournament, requiring separate registration, will be held Saturday, March 7. Call 412-431-0505 to register for classes. The library is at 2205 East Carson Street.
