Police ask for help in shooting of cabbie in Knoxville

January 6, 2009

Zone 3 officers responding to a call at 1:35 a.m. in the 400 block of Moore Avenue in Knoxville for a male shot on December 29, 2008, found a 30 year old black male on his knees outside of the driver's side of a Yellow Cab with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest.

Paramedics transported the victim from the scene to UPMC Mercy Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The female passenger, who had been in the cab prior to the shooting, advised police that she had summoned the cab driver to take her to a convenience store in the South Side Flats area, where she picked up some food to deliver to a friend on Moore Avenue.

The woman said when she arrived at her friend's house, the cab driver waited for her to return. She told the police that as she approached the steps of the residence, she passed an unknown light-skinned black man in his early 20s wearing all black.

The woman said that she heard a gunshot and looked back to see the passenger door of the Yellow Cab open and the unknown black man running down the city steps. She said she ran over to the cab driver and he told her that the man tried to rob him. The passenger, who police declined to identify, stayed on scene with the victim until the paramedics and police arrived.

This incident is under investigation by the PBP Robbery Squad. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Robbery Squad at 412-323-7151.
