Bring a toy to Brashear Open House on Wednesday

In the spirit of the season, the Board of Directors and staff of The Brashear Association will host a Holiday Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 6-7:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public and will take place at the Brashear Center, 2005 Sarah Street, South Side. The Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary School Choir will entertain with a program of holiday music and light refreshments will be provided.

According to Hugh Brannan, the South Pittsburgh agency's executive director, the open house offers a chance to celebrate the season.

"The holidays are busy for all of us," Mr. Brannan said. "Sometimes, it's a good idea to slow down, visit with friends and neighbors, and get back in touch with the seasonal spirit.

"We invite our neighbors and friends to bring a new, unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item to the open house. These items will be shared with area families who face hard times this Christmas. The generous support of the South Pittsburgh community makes it possible for Brashear to help these families."

Throughout November and December, The Brashear Association collects food, toys, and funds to assist families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This Thanksgiving, requests for service rose 50 percent over the previous year. Donations are urgently needed to keep the agency's two food pantries open on a regular basis and fully stocked.

The Brashear Association is a United Way agency. Food assistance programs receive support from the Birmingham Foundation and the Hunger Trust Fund of the City of Pittsburgh, administered by Pittsburgh Community Services.
