Santa coming to South Side Dec. 6

Santa Claus will be coming to East Carson Street this year to "take requests" for Christmas, just a little later than usual.

The South Side Chamber of Commerce usually invites Santa to stop by for photos with neighborhood children on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, Light Up Night on South Side. This year chamber officials realized Santa is a Steeler fan and would like to be at home watching the game between his favorite team and the Cincinnati Bengals on November 20. After checking his appointment book the next available evening he could come to South Side was Thursday, Dec. 4.

According to SSC of C president Nancy Eshelman, the Holiday lights will be up at the usual time to make East Carson Street more festive, but Santa and the rest of the festivities will take place at the Holiday Celebration Thursday, Dec. 4.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the parking lot at 18th and East Carson Street for free photos from 5 to 7 p.m. Making their traditional appearance with Santa at 18th Street will be the Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary School Choir.

Also on December 4, the South Side Local Development Company will be passing out coupon books for discounts at South Side businesses in exchange for the donation of two non-perishable food items for the Brashear Food Pantry.

The Chamber will also hold a small ceremony to light a Christmas Tree at 6 p.m. at the Cindy Esser Plaza at 12th and East Carson Street.

South Side merchants are being encouraged to stay open late on the Thursdays in December.

More is coming to add to the festivities and details will be released in the coming weeks.
