Goodwill seeks nominations for Power of Work Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 Power of Work Awards sponsored annually by Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania to recognize employers who help people with special needs overcome barriers to employment. The deadline for nominations is September 12.
The Power of Work Awards competition is open to employers of all types and sizes – businesses, public entities and nonprofit organizations – in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Employers are encouraged to nominate themselves and nominations also may be submitted by employees, business associates, referral sources and others.
Since the program's inception in 1997, Goodwill has presented the Power of Work Award to 33 different employers.
Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges based on an evaluation of the nominees' efforts in support of workforce development and in creating enhanced opportunities for people with barriers to employment, including individuals in such non-traditional populations as people with physical and/or mental disabilities, displaced workers, participants in welfare-to-work programs, people who are homeless, those with limited work experience or education, older and younger workers, and individuals with criminal backgrounds.
Honorary chairman of the 2008 Power of Work Awards program is David S. Shapira, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Giant Eagle, Inc.
Winners of the 2008 Power of Work Awards will be announced at the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association Conference and Exhibition on October 15. A recognition ceremony will be at Carnegie Music Hall on October 23.
