Local bell ringers headed to Handbell Symposium in FL

July 22, 2008

The South Hills Ringers was selected to participate at the 13th International Handbell Symposium in Orlando, FL.

The biennial event brings together more than 800 handbell ringers from 10 countries. The symposium will take place August 4-8 at Orlando's Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. The American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) will host the event.

This is the first time since 1996 that the symposium has been held on U.S. soil and will not return to the United States until 2020. AGEHR has a rich history dating back to the early 1900's. The popularity of handbell performances grew and choirs from across the globe are now able to share their music and culture with others from around the world. South Hills will travel to Orlando, Fla ., to participate in the International event.

During the International Handbell Symposium, ringers meet with the shared goal of building better communication among ringers, maintaining high musical standards of ringing and performance and encouraging continued interaction among countries. The event features rehearsals and performances by more than 800 ringers at one time under the batons of directors from across the globe.

“The International Handbell Symposium is an opportunity to foster a mutual understanding among handbell musicians across the globe, celebrate unique and vibrant cultures, and elevate the art of handbell ringing worldwide,” said Debbie Rice, president

The symposium will conclude with a final concert, which will be open to the public, at 4:30 p.m. on August 8. For additional information on the symposium, public concert or AGEHR, please visit the AGEHR website at http://www.agehr.org.
