Carrick mural kick-off celebration
Phil Seth will paint this Sprout Fund mural on the side of 1917 Brownsville Road. To kick off Carrick's first mural there will be a celebration on the site on July 9.
Carrick kick, off its Sprout Fund mural on Wednesday, July 9, 6-8 p.m. with a celebration at Vern's Electric, 1917 Brownsville Road.
Carrick was one of only seven neighborhoods to receive a mural grant from the Sprout Fund this year. The community conducted a massive outreach campaign to get as many people as possible involved in the artist selection process. In the seven years the Sprout Fund has provided these grants, Carrick has impressed them the most with its volume of input and dedication.
Sprout divided 35 muralists among the neighborhoods, Carrick was given three. We asked them to create something that represented Carrick's strengths, its homes, vistas, sense of community, but especially its history, families, and hope for the future. Emphasis was put on where the Carrick name came from, Carrick-on-Suir, a town in Ireland (for more info www.carrick-overbrook.org ). This sister city has two defining emblems, a large rock and a swan, and many wanted this depicted as a part of Carrick's heritage.
The mural committee displayed all three paintings with the artists descriptions at the library for two weeks, encouraging everyone to vote for their favorite. At the end of May all the muralists were invited to the Carrick high school auditorium to meet the community, and answer any questions or concerns. All the votes were counted and a favorite artist was selected. It was a close contest but a clear choice was made by the people of Carrick. Phil Seth, a local artist, was chosen.
All are welcome to come out on Wednesday, July 9 to meet Mr. Seth and have some fun. The celebration will be in the parking lot of Vern's Electric, the building that will host the mural, 1917 Brownsville Rd (next to Concord Presbyterian Church).
There will be food, fun and children's activities such as "make your own mural" with giant sidewalk chalk and face painting. Special appearances will be made by the Carrick Litter Patrol, Carrick Tree Tenders, Carrick- Overbrook Historical Society, Carrick Community Council and many more.
