Summer poetry reading at the SouthSide Works


The South Side Summer Poetry Reading will be Wednesday, July 9, 7 p.m. at Joseph-Beth Booksellers, 2705 East Carson Street.

Reading their own poems will be Ann Curran, Judith Robinson and James Deahl. Admission is free. This is an annual even of the South Side Local Development Company and the reading is sponsored by David W. Oster, CPA. Call 412-481-7636 for more information.

Ann Curran is the author of the chapbook “Placement Test,” an editor's choice publication by Main Street Rag Publishing Company. Her poetry has appeared in “Commonweal,” “Loyalhanna Review,” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Three Rivers Poetry Journal” and “Writers Digest.” She covered the International Poetry Forum for the Pittsburgh Press, writing feature stories and reviews of readings. She interviewed such poets as Seamus Heaney, Ruth Stone, Maxine Kumin, Czeslow Milosz and Allen Ginsberg. A former longtime editor of Carnegie Mellon Magazine, she is a contributing editor of Pittsburgh Magazine.

Judith Robinson is an editor, teacher, fiction writer and poet. She was editor of the poetry anthology “Living Inland” (Bennington Press, 1989), and author of “The Beautiful Wife and other stories” (Aegina Press, 1996). Since 2001 she has been poetry editor of “Signatures,” a literary periodical published y the Lifelong Learning Program at Carnegie mellon University. She was a senior editor of “Only the Sea Keeps: Poetry of the Tsunami” (Rupa Publishers, Inc. and Bayeaux Arts, 2005). This year she has co-edited “Along These Rivers: Poetry and Photography from Pittsburgh” with Michael Wurster, a part of Pittsburgh's 250th birthday celebration. Her own poems have been published widely, including appearances in California Quarterly, Blue Unicorn and Voices Israel.

James Deahl was born in Pittsburgh in 1945 and moved to Canada in 1970. He has not only retained his ties to Pittsburgh, but has remained a vital presence in the poetry community here. Deahl is the author, editor or translator of 18 literary titles, most recently “The River's Stone Roots” (Serengeti Press, 2005) and “If Every Two Were One” (Aeolus House, 2008). In 1993 he was the subject of an educational video, Under the Watchful Eye, produced by David Greene and Silver Falls Video.
