Pittsburgh Banksville K-5 celebrates Healthy Breakfasts

Pittsburgh Banksville K-5 students and staff celebrated the culmination of a month-long healthy breakfast initiative with prize giveaways and healthy breakfast items on Thursday, May 29 in the Pittsburgh Banksville Cafeteria.

248 students participated in the month-long initiative that began in April as part of an effort by the Pittsburgh Banksville Food Service Department to increase student participation in the school's breakfast program. The initiative encourages students to eat breakfast every morning and promotes the importance of choosing healthy breakfast foods.

As part of the initiative the school provided information to students and parents on the importance of choosing healthy breakfast items. In an effort to increase student participation, each time a student ate breakfast at school their name was entered into a drawing for prize giveaways.

During the celebration students enjoyed a healthy breakfast of cereal, juice, milk, muffins, and Pop-Tarts. At the end of the breakfast students' names were selected for different prizes. The grand prize includes four Pittsburgh Pirate tickets and $50 for the student to use at the game. Every student will receive a Pittsburgh Pirates poster.

Several local businesses and organizations donated items as prizes for students, including: the Pittsburgh Pirates, Carnegie Science Center, Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh River Hounds, Mt. Lebanon Office Equipment, Cici's Pizza, Chuck E Cheese's, Noble Manor Bowling, and Kuhn's Market.
