“Excel.9-12: Community Input into the Plan for High School Excellence,” a series of community forums designed to give the public an opportunity to learn about Pittsburgh Public Schools' proposals for four new 6-12 learning communities and to offer input as the plans develop, is being presented by A+ Schools.
The meetings are being offered in partnership with the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Pittsburghers are encouraged to join them to listen, learn and participate.
The upcoming meetings are as follows:
• University Prep 6-12 – Thursday, May 1, 5:30 p.m. at the Hill House. This new school will open August 2008 in the Milliones Facility. The schools' principal, along with PPS leadership, will be at the meeting.
• CAPA 6-12 – Thursday, May 15, 5:30 p.m., 31st Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower Downtown.
• IB 6-12 – Tuesday, May 20, 5:30 p.m., 31st Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower, Downtown.
• Science & Technology 6-12 – Thursday, May 29, 5:30 p.m., 31st Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower, Downtown.
The meetings are designed to be part of the evolving planning at the Pittsburgh Public Schools. An initial set of meetings were held in February, March and April. At those meetings participants heard district plans and offered feedback. Reports from the earlier meetings can be found at www.aplusschools .org/discussion.html. The upcoming meetings will afford participants an opportunity to hear updated plans from the district and how community ideas have been incorporated.
“We believe it is important to engage in a deliberate and honest dialog about proposals for school improvement,” notes A+ Schools Executive Director Carey Harris. Our schools can succeed if we are all invested in making them work. That investment includes having a voice in the change process.”
The meetings are free and open to the public. Childcare will be provided on-site for children over 1. Doors open at 5:30 when a light dinner will be served; the programs begin at 6 p.m. A+ Schools will validate tickets for the Mellon Square parking garage for meetings occurring downtown. Space for the event is limited.
Anyone wishing to participate should RSVP online at www.aplusschools.org/excel_reg.html or by calling 412-258-2660.
