A graduate of the Brashear Association's Arts Apprenticeship Program and a lifelong resident of the South Side, Mr. Szafranski is currently pursuing a degree in photojournalism at Point Park University.
The exhibit, which documents his view of the South Side, benefits The Brashear Association. Mr. Szafranski's photographs reveal a vision of the community quite unlike the commonplace views of Carson Street revelers or post-industrial South Side. Through his photography, he exposes the hidden corners of the neighborhood, the bits of nature embedded in the concrete, the secret spots where children play.
The interplay of light with darkness characterizes many of his photos: the refracted diamonds on water, bright summer sun illuminating a tree-shaded path, the light filtered through a tree at twilight. His photos are a record of his thorough and intimate exploration of a South Side that few take time to see.
A Photographic Exhibit of Recent Works by Gabriel Szafranski will be on display through the month of April 2008 at the Brashear Center, 2005 Sarah Street. For more information, contact the Brashear Association at 412-431-2236.
