Positive points to the boro
I have been a resident of Mount Oliver Borough for the better part of 55 years. There comes a time when someone has to speak up and point out some of the positive points of the borough.
Certainly the news media is not aware of any because when and if they conduct an interview, it is with someone who probably doesn't even live here or only rents.
The home owners and long time residents of this borough can be thankful that they have a police department that is not only dedicated, but professional in every sense. The current force has done and continues to do, a very good job in making this borough safe. The best it has been in a long time.
The problems with this borough are no different than any other parts of the City of Pittsburgh. The problems seemed to be magnified when something happens. Just look where this borough is situated and that will answer a lot of questions. For years transit traffic has been a problem and will continue to be a problem.
The other is some landlords who do not require any type of background check other than greenbacks in their hand. Absentee landlords have always created serious problems, because the property continues to deteriorate to the point where it cannot be repaired or renovated. Let borough officials try to rectify this though and they get stonewalled at either the city or county. Just like everyone else, borough officials get lip service.
The Borough of Mount Oliver has taken steps to eliminate nuisance bars and residents, they are going to hold landlords responsible for their tenants. These are positive steps. I would hope that channels 2, 4 and 11 would attend a borough meeting, the next one is April 21st at 7:30 p.m. and ask the people who know what's going on in the borough, not just any two or three people standing on the street corner.
It's time for the long term residents and home owners of this borough to stand up and help borough officials continue to make progress, by attending monthly meetings and making suggestions and by reporting any sign of criminal activity, no matter how small. By doing this we can make this borough a better place to live, for everyone.
Borough officials, fire chief, police department can only do so much, it takes a combined effort to make it work. Everybody in this borough has to get involved in some way, shape or form. With a new borough council, mayor, and the changes taking place, the borough will continue to stand on its own.
