The 18th Annual Plant Sale of the Botanic Garden of Western Pennsylvania will be held at the Green Tree Fire Hall and Community Center on Poplar Street, just off the Parkway West, on Saturday May 17.
A broad selection of plants will be offered via a catalog for pre-ordering, as well as on the day of the sale. Pre-orders may also be placed online at www.botanicgardenwpa.org.
All of the plants in the sale are carefully selected by a team of experts, and all are hardy and easy to grow in this region. This year's listing of plants includes native plants, which plant sale customers increasingly request, as well as many plants suited to shady conditions.
All the plants in the sale exhibit outstanding ornamental characteristics and many are new introductions or are limited in their local availability. They are all proven performers that are well suited to area gardens.
Plants must be pre-ordered by April 15 and be picked up on Saturday, May 17, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Green Tree Fire Hall and Community Center on Poplar Street. Orders may be placed online at www.botanicgarden wpa.org. Or, request a catalog by calling 412-444-4464, faxing 412-444-4465, or by emailing email@example.com.
New this year are Penn State soil test kits available onsite, as well as horticulturalists who can answer questions about soil testing. This year's sale also features tool sharpening and a rare plant raffle.
Back by popular demand are ‘Captivating Combinations' in the catalog for pre-ordering; these are groupings of plants for shade, sun, scent, color, and various seasonal interests. In addition to the catalog items, there will be many other new and interesting shrubs, perennials and annual plants available for purchase on site, as well as horticultural experts to help you make your selection. Botanic Garden members receive a 10 percent discount on their plant purchases.
Proceeds of the plant sale will benefit the development of the Botanic Garden of Western PA, on 452 acres at Settlers Cabin County Park, 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.
