Parents of current 8th grade students may now apply to send their child to the District's new University Prep 6-12 School opening for the start of the 2008-09 school year.
The school, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), will open in the Milliones facility, beginning with the 9th grade. Applications will be available at any district school serving students in grades 6-8, the Office of Student Services, 341 S. Bellefield Avenue in Oakland, or by visiting the district website at http://www.pps.k12.pa.us.
Additionally, parents can pick up an application at any of the information sessions: Wesley Center, 2701 Centre Avenue, March 25, 6-8 p.m .; Reizenstein Library, 129 Denniston Avenue, April 1, 5-7 p.m .; or, Pittsburgh Allegheny 6-8, 810 Arch Street, April 2, 5-7 p.m.
Completed applications can be returned in person to the Office of Student Services or mailed to the attention of Cate Reed at 341 S. Bellefield Avenue, Room 128, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (Oakland).
“This new flagship school is the centerpiece of our high school reform efforts,” said Superintendent Mark Roosevelt.
On February 27, the Board of Directors approved the opening of the University Prep 6-12 school, beginning with a 9th grade for the start of the 2008-09 school year. This new school is open to 9th grade non-magnet students, who would have been previously assigned to Pittsburgh Schenley.
Additional applications are available to any student in the district with preference being given to students who live in the Hill District. In addition to its deep partnership with Pitt, University Prep features a parent center, college and career center and professional development center designed to ensure communications between teachers, students, administrators and partner organizations.
The school will begin with the 9th grade, growing over time to serve students in grades 6-12.
