Phillips students meet ‘The Great One'

As part of this year's Black History Month Celebration at Pittsburgh Phillips K-5 the school hosted a very special performance for all students where Gregory Kenney of Educate Us Productions presented his one man show on the life and times of Roberto Clemente.

Gregory Kenney performs as Roberto Clemente at Pittsburgh Phillips Elementary School with students (from left) Joshua Burks-McCormick, Asaunte Pack, Facundo Gonzalez, Dara Kovacevic, and Myriah Morris.

Mr. Kenney, a formally trained actor, wowed the students as he performed in character as Roberto Clemente, uniform and all.  He then fielded questions and was able to articulate much about what Mr. Clemente meant to his race, the city of Pittsburgh and the game of baseball to a new generation of fans.

Teachers had read many books and shared stories and personal knowledge with the children throughout the month in anticipation of this performance and this building of background knowledge was very evident in the questions that the children then had for Mr. Kenney.
