Runners can join in One-Mile Challenge
Local runners can lace up their sneakers on Sunday, March 9 for the fifth annual Athletic Trainer River Run 5K and One-Mile Challenge.
Hosted by UPMC Sports Medicine, the event will benefit the scholarship fund of the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers' Society (PATS).
Race-day registration and other opening activities will begin at 8 a.m. in the Indoor Training Field at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, 3200 Water St ., South Side, where free parking is available. A warm-up session will be held at 9 a.m ., and the 5K and One-Mile-Challenge will follow at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m ., respectively. An awards ceremony for each race, a silent auction and a raffle will take place throughout the event. The day will conclude with a social gathering for all certified athletic trainers in celebration of National Athletic Training Month.
For those who register by Saturday, March 8, participation in the 5K is $15, the one-mile challenge cost is $10, and the fee for both races is $20. Same-day registration will cost $18 for the 5K, $14 for the one-mile challenge and $25 for both. Each registrant will receive a T-shirt and raffle ticket for a chance to win logo items and apparel from local sports teams. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the race for $2 each. Plaques will be awarded to the overall top three male and female finishers, and age group awards also will be presented.
Certified athletic trainers are medical professionals who are specially trained in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of all types of injury and illness that may occur to athletes or physically active people. The Athletic Trainer River Run is organized by the certified athletic training staffs and students from UPMC Sports Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, California University of Pennsylvania, Duquesne University, Waynesburg University and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
