Kayla's Run benefits Cribs for Kids

July 17, 2007

On Sunday, July 22, more than 600 runners will participate in the Eighth Annual Kayla's Run for Sudden Infant Death Services of Pennsylvania (SIDS of PA) and at the same time raise much-needed funding to support the Cribs for Kids® Campaign and SIDS support services.

The event takes place each year in memory of Kayla Marie Mangan, who died suddenly and unexpectedly in her sleep on December 2, 1998. Kayla's Run for SIDS, a 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk, is certified and sanctioned by Runners High. The race starts at Baldwin High School and travels through Baldwin and Whitehall neighborhoods. Pre-registration is $16 and ends on Monday, July 16. Registration on race day is $18.

All participants receive food, beverages, a race T-shirt, and entrance into random drawings for nearly 100 prizes valued at more than $10,000. Prizes include TVs, getaway weekends, and much more. A special trophy will be given to the overall male and female winners and trophies will be given to the top three males and females in each age group.

“We are so fortunate to have dedicated people like Gary Mangan raising funds for Cribs for Kids®. Through his efforts, and with the support of the community, this year's race should put total funds raised at more than $100,000.” Judy Bannon, Executive Director, SIDS of PA and Cribs for Kids®.

SIDS of PA's Cribs for Kids® campaign, initiated in Pittsburgh by District Attorney Stephen Zappala and the late Mayor Bob O'Connor, helps reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome and accidental suffocation. The program provides cribs to families in need, who would otherwise not have safe places for their babies to sleep.

SIDS of PA's continued support of programs such as the ‘Back to Sleep' and Cribs for Kids® is responsible for cutting SIDS rates in Allegheny County by close to 50% since 1994 and have seen all of the babies, who have received cribs, go on to celebrate their first birthdays. Cribs for Kids® has rapidly networked to 140 distributing partners in 32 states throughout the US. To date they have given more than 25,000 cribs.
