Sabers have their ups and downs in recent games

October 3, 2006

The South Side Sabers hosted the Steel Valley Ironmen for five games on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Quarry Field.

The first game of the day pitted the Saber team of seven and eight-year-olds against their Steel Valley counterparts. The game started out even between the teams, but the Ironmen quickly proved to be too much for the Sabers to handle. Steel Valley won in a shutout 24-0.

Coach Vince Massaro and his team of nine year olds displayed true grit in a defensive battle with the Ironmen. Defense dominated the game with neither team scoring until late in the third quarter. With 32 seconds left in the game and the ball on the five-yard-line, the Sabers were able to punch it in for the only score of the game. The Sabers defeated the Ironmen, 8-0.

The third game of the day was a clash of 10-year-olds in a defensive gem. The teams battled to a 6-6 tie at the end of regulation. Unfortunately for the Sabers, the Ironmen were able to score in overtime and took the game 12-6.

The Sabers' team of 11-year-olds also experienced a rough day against Steel Valley, losing the match-up 30-6. South Side gave the Ironmen and early battle, but were no match for their counterparts.

Steel Valley brought in a very good team of 12 and 13-year-olds that dominated the Sabers from beginning to end in the final game of the day, eventually winning 38-8. Highlights for South Side included a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Sabers had a better day on September 16 when they traveled to Chartiers Valley High School Stadium for a series of games against the Colts.

Utilizing a good running game and a stout defense, the Sabers' team of nine-year-olds defeated the Chartiers Valley team 34-14.

The Sabers team of 10 year olds got back to their winning ways by crushing Chartiers Valley 34-0.

The most exciting game of the day occurred between the Sabers and Colts 11-year-olds. The game went almost four scoreless quarters before Chartiers Valley scored on a Sabers' fumble at their 10-yard-line.

On the ensuing kickoff with 1:17 left on the Colts choose to try to kick off deep instead of squibbing the ball. South Side returned the ball 70 yards for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion to send the game into overtime. The Sabers were able to pull out the victory, 14-8, in the second overtime.

The South Side Sabers' Midget team (12 and 13-year-olds) traveled to Bethel Park to play their counterparts and lost in a close game, 8-6.
